PROPOSED PIPITEA WHARF
— ♦- FOR OCEAN-LINEES. The long-premeditated Pipitea Wharf is referred to in dotail in tho annual report of the engineer to the Harbour Board (Mr. J. Marchbanks). He says :— "The principal -new work in contemplation, is the construction of tho Pipitea Wharf. Tlio board last year had this matter under consideration and finally; approved of the preliminary plans submitted, except that it was decided to increase the length of tho proposed wharf by 100 feet, making it 948 ft. Gin. long on the eastern side and 76ft. long on tho western side, the overall width boing 186 ft. A transit shed, 762 ft. long by 86ft. wido ov-erall, will provide ample room for dealing with tho cargoes of two largo ocean liners at ono time. There will bo a moderate amount of room for smaller vessels taking transhipments. It is proposed to equip the shed with fast-running overhead? electric cranes for stacking and loading vehicles, whilo 2Jtoii and 15 cwt. double-powered semi-portal hydraulic cranes aro proposed for loading and -unloading vessels. Provision is made for double railway tracks on each side of the wharf to deal with inward or outward rail-borne cargo. The wharf is to be built of reinforced concrete with a covering of either mineral asphalt or wood-blocks, and the rails will be flush with tho surface. There will be a space of 50 feet outside tho shed, which should provide ample room both for heavy cargo which is not required to be shedded and for receiving and trucking from tho slings. The greatest depth of water at the outer end of the proposed wharf is 46ft. 6in. below low water, diminishing to 33 feet a r shore end of the wharf. The working drawings of the wharf and shed aro now virtually completed, so that arrangements can bo made at an early date foi going on with tho work should tho board so decide.
"Other works to be gone on with arethe construction of the roads on the Waterloo Quay reclamation, and the partial reading of tho Tc~Aro reclamation. No provision" has yot been made for the construction of a store from which all supplies to the different departments would be issued and controlled. It is very desirable that all materials used .on new works or on repairs should bo procured and issued by a storekeeper."
