STILL CROWDED.

TECHNICAL SCHOOL'S NEEDS. Questioned yesterday on th'e present conditjqni.of the Technical School in -regard to accommodation during this, the first term of the now year, Mr. W. S. La Trobe, tho Director, , stated"that the position was naturally-becoming more acute. One only had to take the return of students who attended last year and compare it with that of tho "previous year in order to be convinced that this .was' so. DUring last year, the number ; of students; aiteiidnigAvdre". as',' -followi-r-Day technical, .Sftfyj-rksspoiated;. cjasses,, 1,170; students from tho Boys' and Girls' Colleges and «thfc ■■ Training College, 391: total, aß2l.'vTh'is total was:.lu'Uiigher thail the number jor 1912/;.ind'tho' number for; tho latter year was 100 in excess of that for the.year 1911^/Iho'number of class entries -was- 2365,-' which was 214 in'excess of. tliV number'for the previous year. These figures, said Mr. La Trobc, showed at a glance the increasing demand on tho resources of the school.

The -want of room (continued the Director)'is further emphasised by the restriction which has had to be placed on the numbers' of students attending cer-tain-sections. 'For-instance, the school is unable to accommodate more students in tlio day commercial, evening bookkeeping, shorthand and typewriting, cookery, anddrcssmakingsoctions. The best; that'can; bo dono is being done by filling .^vacancies. as students drop out, but all tho sections mentioned are at present full, and there aro applications for entry in most of. them. A few mouths ago the. Technical School Board made an effort to push forward, the proposal to secure a new and more central site "for a larger school, and tho City Council! gave' support. The issue of a proclamation regarding this site is now under tlio consideration of fho Government.
