PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of tha Petone_ Borough Council was held' last evening. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. ,}. W. M'Kivaa), and Councillors 'irueromi, Joiws, Townsend, Fiudlav, Andei'Mn, Cox. and Forsyth. Councillor Jnudky moved: "That sn addition _bs made to the building bylaws givin«' the engineer power to refer to thsconncil applications for the erection of all buildings, which in his.,opinion are unsightly or likely to be objectionable to adjoining premises, and that tho onus of issuing the permit rest with tho council."
The Mayor considered that this should be submitted to the municipal solicitor, SO that tho council might ascertain ■whether it had power to act in the direction contemplated in the motion. 'This course was agreed to. . A _depntatioa from ' tho Heretannga Beating Club waited on the council regarding the proposed boat harbour.
Mr, J. A. M'Donald, as spokesman of the deputation, stated that at a meeting held last Wednesday evening the question was fully discussed. Some £55 was then promised, and by Saturday evening this amount had been'raised"to £6U. Next -year the Petonc boating fraternity intended holding a regatta in conjunction with the Early Settlers' Association, and ho hoped that they woti'M have the boat harbour by then.
Tho Mayor inquired whether the Heretaunga Club would do all that was kgally necessary for guaranteeing to the council, the £60 mentioned.
Mr. M'Doiiald replied that they would. The matter was afterwards considered by.the council in committee.
In reference to Wilfortt.Settlement, the of Crown Lands wrote asking die council to undertake tho work «f prepariiiu- plans and supervision for the rmuiing of the estate, and. stating that tho council would be paid a iea.son.able fee for so doing. A reply h to be sent to the effect that the council will undertake the work.
A request, was'received from'the secretary of the Day's Bay Bush Committee (Mr. li. W. Shallcrass), asking the council, to contribute towards tho cost of acquiring the bush. The Mayor has already replied that the council will bo unable to contribute.
The Wellington Motor Cycling Club .Wrote, in reference to the council's resolution regarding the lighting of vehicles travelling nt night. They stated that the dub was in accord with the spirit of the resolution, and offered to assist. —Received,
Mr. W. J. Percy asked the council to cancel the option given over liis gardens.—Tire r«(i'scsfc was agreed to. The Borough Engineer (Mr. A. Oowie) reported on various .work in progress. Referring to tins proposed extension of Islington Street, he stated that ho had prepared a plan showing how tho two properties concerned Would ?so effected. He had presumed that each of the par-ties-would dedicate a strip of land 13ft, wide along Udv Street, in order to widen that street to 33ft. from the centre of the. roadway, Building permits to the total value of £1680 had been issued for the month, bringing the. total for the year up to £38,467,' The sewage engineer, in Ids monthly report, stated that the cost of work to date was £13,183 os. 7d,
The monthly report from the manager of Iks gasworks stated, inter alia, that the council's instructions to obtain fioai from the Stale C<«il Company had been complied with, and a cargo «f 253 tons, per s,s. Alexander, had been delivered at the Petoue Wharf. The manager said timt he trusted that this would he the forerunner, of wafiy similar loads, and that the council would be prepared to repeal the- .order in a lew weeks,
