JOTTINGS PROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. • (From Our Kueoittl Correspondents.) NAPIER. Mr. A. B. Gatenby, son of Mr: R. M. Gatenby, well known in Hastings, is to be married to Miss Florence Longmore at Sydney on May 18. Tlie Holiday Association at Hastings , is observing St. Patrick's Day this year in placo of the usual Wednesday halfholiday. The Civil Servants of Napier are holding a picnic on St. Patrick's Day as a farewell to Mr. It. T. Sadd, Commissioner of Crown Lands, who has oeen promoted to the chargo of the Otago District. Four applications to acquire freeholds wore approved at yesterday's meetingof the Hawko's Bay Land Board. Business is very quiet in Napier at the present time, but Hastings appears to bo forging ahead, and numerous substantial brick buildings are in course of erection there. It is rumoured that ■ another daily paper will shortly make ius appearance in Hastings. . . . . • ' There has been a considerable amount of .agitation lately for an extension of the Napier tramways to Taradalo, a suburb five miles distant, and for the construction of a new road from Napier South across the river and swamp. That would eonsideraSiJ shorten the route to Meanee, Greenmeadows, and Taradale. At Monday's meeting of the Harbour Board a proposal .will be made for the reclamation dredge to commence reclaiming land six chains wide, so that a road may be formed without delay., Following the- completion of the road, a good deal of settlement will take place in the outlying district, as houses at reasonable rents are exceedingly scarce in Napier, and what building allotments there are have a prohibitive price placed upon them. Yesterday's meeting of members of the. Land Board presented the Commissioner, Mr. R. T. Sadd, with a framed photograph of the board, as a mark of the esteem of members, and in recognition of the valuable services rendered by Mr. Sadd to tho Hawke's Bay district. ' . ' ■'. '
