WIDOWS CLAIM, CRANT OF *468 GOMPENSATtOM. A EUin of £468 lias been awarded by the Arbitration Court to Antaiia iSicholsoii] widow, of Ma-rtinlwrough, who claimed against Walter I'rancis Gundrie, soddter, «rf Slartkiboroughj in respect of the death of her husband. > The- latter had been an employee in the service of defendant. Mrs.- Nicli* olson's claim was for £513. It- was alleged that her htisbautl bad died as the resiilt of te poismwd hand. This injury, it was said, had Uecii sustained while deceased was working for Gund' riq, and had be£u doßasionod by the prick from an awl. Oix the other hand doi'endant alleged that Nioholaoft had really injured his hand while stacking wood at home-. Tho president of the Ociurt (Judge Stringer) said ttiat plaintifi had made out her case, and that tho dtifenne, in some respects, was not quite satisfactory. The Cour* had accepted the statement of the plaintiff and her witnebses. The only alternative far the Court would be to believe that the plaintiff's story was a deliberate conception. Judgment was for tile plaintiff for £468;. £110 would s© to Mrs. Nicholson, and tho balance *ill. be handed to tho Publjo Trustpo to be invested for the benefit of plaintiff and her four children. JEWELLER'S AWARD. The award of the Court of Arbitration in tho Wellington Jewellers' dispute was filed in, tho Suprcaio Court yesterday morning. The • sward esmes into force on 1 Monday test, mid remains operative for two years. It provides tbttt a full week's work shall consist of 46i- hours to be worked between 8 a.m. and 6 p,tn. on five days of the week, and between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on. one day of tho week. Over* time is to be paid for at tho rate -of timo and a quarter for the first two hours,- and time and a half thereafter. For work on Sundays, Christmas Day, Good Friday, New Year'a Day, Easter Monday, Labour Day, King's Birthday, and picnic day dcible time is to be paid. For tho purpose of tho award the employees are divided into two classes of workers—journeymen and apprentices. Journeymen are to. receive at least" £3 per w-eek, aud tfee pay for apprentices is fise4 as follows: First year, 7a. Gd. per week; second year, 12s. 6d.; third, 17s. 6d..; fourth, £1 2s. Gd.; fifth, £1 7s. 6r1.; sixth, £i 15s. 'Provision, is made for rantieT-rate workers.
The award does not apply to shop foremen and shop managers. The area affected is that lying within" ii radius of 25 miles from the G.P.0., ■fellington, but it may be extended. Tlie award embodies, without alteration, tlto recommendation, of the Council of Conciliation which the parties agreed f<3 accept.
