PETONE BOAT HABBOUR
ANOTHER STEP,
A PUfllfO MEETING HELD
Another step in tho direction of pushing forward the project of forming a boat harbour off the Petone foroshoro was taken at a public meeting held in the Hcrotaunga Boating Club's shed at Petone last evening. A committee, consisting of. representatives of tho Here--taunga Club, was sat up to meet tho Petone Borough Council at its meeting next- Monday and pkco before it the nature and amount of support which' the boating fraternity of tho bo-rough Was prepared to give. In connection with the scheme, it may be mentioned that Councillor Fiud'iay, of the Petone iJoroiigh Council, first brought the. matter into prominence, and since then phuis and estimates have beeft framed by the engineer of tho Wellington Harbour Board. Details of the estimate have been previously published. It ranges from £1600 to £2000, with certain additions for sinking fund arid depreciation. Last night's roosting, was largely attended, and £53 was promised from amongst those present for moorings in the proposed harbour. . Mr. JT A. jVt'Oonald, club captain of the Here- ■ taunga Boating Club, presided, while also in attendance Were the- Mayor ; of Petone- (Mr. J. W. M'Bwan) and a I number of Borough Councillors. Mr. J. A. M'Donald, in the course of a speech* painted out heir much the Hereiaunga Beating Club had been handicapped in tho past by the want of such a harbour. In a heavy southerly j it-was almost an impossibility at pre,-' sent to launch boats from tho' beach', and tho launching of a boat at- any time entailed a tremendous amount of trouble. Tho speaker went on to say thai he had approached different boating chins i in Wellington in regard to the proposal and. had boon informed that- reasonable support would bo given. The clubs ia Wellington would pay a cei-' tain sum per annum for moorings when their boats were- over on tho Petone side of the harbour. Ho had already I had Quite a number of promises to tako moorings for two years. ' Mr. J. \V. M'ffiwau also addressed ', the meeting. Ho said that, as yet, the Wellington Harbour Board had not- committed itself to tho project. He wits sure, however, that if the Petone Oo'tmcit found half the annual charge tho Harbour Board, as a reasonable' body, would find tho other half. In entering into an agreement they must- remember, however, that the- Harbour Board, would not recognise the Heretaunga Boating Club in the matter, but only tho Petone Council, "With the help of tho fieretaunga Boating Club, however," said Mr. M'Bwan, "I hone to be able to say to the Harbour Board I at its next inert-ins, that tho council will bo able to pay half the annual charges;" Mr. -M'Ewa-n added that in connection with tho general' foreshore improvement scheme the Borough Council intended dispensing with a number of tho boat sheds at present on tho beach and erecting a large shed sufficient to afiftoffimodato all.
111 answer to a question Mr, M'Dwi* aid stated that tho float Harbour would be capable of accommodating 160 boats. Representatives of the Navals and Rowing Clubs stated that they were mta that their respective clubs would contribute.;
