HUGE SCORE IN SOUTHLAND.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Invercargill, March 11. The match between Southland and Australia was concluded to-day in brilliant weather, and beforo a big attendance. Tho gato for the day totalled £102. Australia scored 709 runs, centuries being made by Cody, Collins, M'Keuzio, and Trumper. The wicket wore well; and tho Australians say that it .is equal to any played on during tho tour. The feature of tho innings was the brilliant display by Trumper (211). Ho scored freely all round the wicket, but gave two chalices. The home team was given an afternoon's leather-hunting. Cody and Collins resumed to tho bowling of Groves and Doig, runs coming rapidly'. At the luncheon adjournment tho score stood at 215, the partnership being unsevercd (Cody 101, Collins 39). Shortly after Cody skied Doig to point, where A. Hamilton tosk the catch. His score included ten fours. The punishment of tho bowling continued, the Australians frequently stepping out to it. At 3.6 p.m. the third century appeared (Collins 90, M'Kenzio 33). Collins reached his century a little later, and this marked his highest score for tho tour, his next best innings having been 83 against South Auckland. His end came at 339, when Doig took him at first slip, off Bannerman. The batsman had a great reception on returning. Trumper went in next, and then twos, threes, and fours camo in quick succession. He reached double, figures in four minutes, but D. Hamilton, fielding at mid-on, missed him off Doig when ho was 16. It was a costly mistake Trumper knocked 13, off tho following over from Bannermah, and, at 3.50 p.m., tho fourth century went up. Tho last halfcentury occupied only 13 minutes. Trumper was again missed—this time in the long field—and then ho began hitting one long string of fours. He mado 50 in 26 minutes, and at tho tea adjournment the scoro was 438. M'Kcnzie brought his 100 up in two hours, and ho hit Hamilton twice clean out the ground. He was oventually caught at square-leg. Armstrong went iu, and Trumper hoisted his first century for 80 minutes' play. At this stage the batsmen were content to take nothing but fours, arid clmuges in the bowling were useless. Six hundred was hoisted by Trumper hitting Grovc3 over the rails for 6, but soon afterwards Armstrong was caught in the slips. Crawford joined Trumper who now had 161 to his credit. _ Tho scoring was/very lively, 20 coming off one over. Trumper got his second century in 105 minutes,: and was at last caught in the long-field. ,Ho had hit four sixes and 33 fours. Noble joined Crawford and the scoring slowed down. Seven hundred was telegraphed by Noble hitting Poole for 4, and then the innings closed by Crawford being taken on tho boundary. Scores: — Southland. First innings 15G Australia. M'Gregor, b.
