Matters of interest in connection with 1 the manufacturing .industries of the .Dominion wero discussed at a general meeting of members of the-Wellington Provincial Industrial; Association held last night. Air. .0. -B. Norwood presided over a good attendance. ■
It was reported, that .there was a credit balance.of £52, while the sum of £1227 was. on fixed deposit;
■ Various alterations to the rules (as suggested by the association's solicitor) were submitted to. the meeting and agreed.to. . '.•,■.... The chairman reported what had taken place last month-<u the meeting convened by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. 1 ,. Massey) \o discuss matters in connection with Now Zealand representation at the Manama Exhibition. It was resolved that the chairman and Messrs. A. W. Newton and A. E. Donne , bo appointed to represent the association on the committee appointed to look after New Zealand, interests. ■
.Auckland Exhibition. Mr. T. Ballinger, who recently visited the Auckland Exhibition, stated that he had been very'pleased to note what a fine show tho authorities had there. He was , surprised to see tho number of people looking at the exhibits after what he' had 'heard ; to the -contrary, but' ho thought that thero could be no doubt that.a mistake had been made in planning the building. It .was a fine sight from tho outside, but from .the exhibitors' point of view it should have been all on tho level. Another thing which ho was satisfied about;was that as far as exhibits were concerned it would never do to have a. show of this kind ■ in summer time, as the people would not waste time inside studying exhibits. The show should-be in the winter, and the building so .planned that the public would have to pass along by tho exhibits to reach tho places of amusement. , Mr. Ballinger also mentioned that he had been'very well treated by Messrs. Elliott (president) and Holmes (secretary) wrile on his visit to the Exhibition.
It wasdeoided that , , a letter should be sent to Messrs. Elliott and Holmes conveying the thanks of.the association for the manner in. which they had looked after Mr. Ballinger, during his visit.
A Profitable Business. • , Mr. A. W. Newton deliverer! a tenminute address om "The Eeoovery of Glycerine from the Soap Manufacturer's Waste Products.'.'' Hβ stated that in 1881, when tho prico of glycerine went up to £72 per ton, the soap manufacturers took up the task of recovering the glycerine from the waste' product, , or ■ lye. ,, ' Very soon,: however, tho price, dropped to £27 per ton,, and had hovered between £27 and £35 .until quite recently. At that price it did not pay to recover glycerine here, as it cost at least £27 per ton to land it in tho market. The price.bad now, however, advanced again to from £52 ■to £56 per .ton, and at this price there was good profit in the business for New Zealand manufacturers. Tho, rise in prioe was, '. ho thought, duo to tho demand for .oxplo-, sives during the, last, iow: years, . as glycerine' was. the basis of explosives. As one reason for this.increased .demand he mentioned tho very large' amount-of explosives used in the, constructiott oi the Panama Canal. ■'i ; ;, .'.;'■..
Throughout.his address Jlr. was closely followed;, and,'at, the,,conclusion he was : ac'c'praeu .''i;'"v6to"-6f thanks and heartily .applauded.. , '.
■, .Railway Freights, . Railway freighY ba short timber formed the; ;subject- of a. report by the .sec-' rotary, who drew the attention of the meeting to the fact that:the freight on it was practically double thp freight on , the bigger'class of timber. 'The result was tnat fruitgrowers and others, who used this" 1 class of timber, could import it- more cheaply .than they'could obtain it from the New Zealand mills, and the millers had therefore to discard it. Recently .a /representing the" Auckland, Canterbury,. and Wellington Associations had Waited upon the Minister of Railways/arid had asked.that tho tariff should'be so arrauged that short timber should .• .be carried ' at the same price . as' other timber such as port and rails. -..;The Minister undertook to give the matter fresh consideration, but informed the deputation that he. was not likely' to"v advocate • ' any change that would be likely .to injure the railway "revenuei ; ; ■■■'.-

Mr. W. J. Gandiii drew attention to the injustice suffered by grain ; merchants owing to grain being weighed on the trucks; Every truck'was supposed to be a regulation weight, but very often -gained in weight on account of alterations made. Merchants 'sometimes, lost as much as4os. on a truck-load' on tins account, and appeared to have no remedy.- • .--. . The chairman suggested that Mr. faaudm eTiould bring forward some par.ticular. instances in order that the association could'take action.. •:
Other Matters. , . '. A letter was received from the- Industrial Association of Canterbury stating that at the last'meeting of that body; Mr. J. A. Frostick proposed that the association should endeavour to interest manufacturers'-and others in a proposed conference to consider the loss or time caused in many of our industries through'-men willing to work being unable to work ; full«timo-"through no fault of their own." Tho Oanterte U / 3 i SOolatloU was •taking the raat♦fft tlm *' the se °retary of \™ . Wellington Association (Mr; H F Allen) had written to tho Canterbury Association asking for further particulars \, The , meeting resolved -i-to defor consideration of the matter until the receipt of particulars regarding tho wording "through no fault of their
