FIREMEN & THEIR WAGES
NAVIES MEN LEAVE. (By~ Telesraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, March 10. A report was brought by tho steamer Navua which arrived from tho,Eastern Pacific this morning, 'that when at Suva on March 5 tho firemen, waited upon tho captain and demanded payment of their wages at once.* The •men made tho demand under a section of their agreement with tho Union Company. Tho captain considered, however, that tho agreement did not entitle tho men to mako such a demand, and gave them ten minutes to decide whether or not they would peacefully accept their wages on tho following day. Tho men eventually agreed to take tho course suggested, and it then appeared that no further trouble would arises. When tho Navua left Suva for Auckland on tho following day, howover, tho whole seventeen firemen gave notico that thoy would leave tho vessel when it arrived at Auckland. Accordingly, when tho Navua berthed at the northern wharf this morning the firemen left tho ship in a body. Tho Union Company at once set about procuring other men to tako tho place of those leaving. Tho steamer was ablo to sail for Wellington this evening, at 8.30 with a full complement of firemen.
