PROPOSAL TO CHANGE NAME. (By Telegraph.-Special Correspondent.) ;' ' • Palltierston, March 10. A proposal to change, this name of Palmerston North was put before the Chamber of Commerce on Monday by Mr. M. A. Elliott, ex-prepidont, who notice to movo that the name be simply Palmerston. A ,irovious proposal to adopt the (he sa.id,.,dis r : approi'cd .because people felt.'that,Tal-'i merston was a name known all ,over New/Zealand. Hβ believed-that a town like theirs, of. 11,000 to 12,000 people could no.longer consider,tho rival claim to tho name of a village in the South Island of 1500 people Ho know that the Postal Department would welcome tho changeowing to'-tho innumerable- letters which' were now going astray. Mr. J. M. Johnston advocated that the name should be Manawatu. Mr. Hodde/: Mere euphonious. Mr. Nash: But.Manawatu is too extensive. " . .. . .... . Mr. Johnston: All the better, because Palmerston is in tho middle of it, and Manawatu is known everywhere. The matter comes up for decision at next meeting, and possibly a public meeting will be called.
