As far hack as September last the news waj received from London that the Hon. Sir Samuel M'Oaughe.T had cabled an offer to tho treasurer of tho Ulster Indemnity Fund to contribute any sum required, an offer which it was.said had "excited universal attention and was credited with having exercised a. tremendous influence on the situation." The day following this announcement a Sydney cablegram was received statinp. that Sir Samuel. M'Caughey. had 'denied having cabled to the treasurer of tho Ulster Fund authorising Sir Edward Carson to .draw to an unlimited extent on his hankers. He then said that ho had forwarded a chequo by letter, and Jiad since cahled: "No money or authority., t» draw on my bankers." "That." said Sir Samuel in the interview, "would h? too much—it might break me." 1 Last, .evening' advice was received to the- effect that it was reported in London on .the. authority of Earl Grpv that an Australian resident had eiven the sum. of £25,000 to tho Ulster Fund, and that Sir Samuel M'Caughcy was tho probable, donor. .
