RECORD ATTENDANCE.
THE ATHLETIC GATHERING.
Tho second Wellington Citizens' Carnival was brought to a successful eloso oil Saturday night, and the Carnival' spirit reigned supreme gt Ntfwtoviui Tark. There was a clear night, and a oright moon, and gome- six thousand persons were attracted to the park. In many respects the night was the most lively and enjoyable since the Carnival Opened.
Ihe sailors' sports wew, of coufse, snecially devised for sailofs, and it is 1 doubtful jf otber than men from the sea could havo entered into them with sucu wiiole-souled e.njoyment—enjoyment too which unstintedlT spread to the «f lookers. _ Amongst the items billed for the bluejackets ivas » haekot raoo, in which competitors carried a bucketful ol water on, their lieads, ■ and t-h® last man arriving homo had the water poured over him. Ho took it in good part, though it was a fairly cold night. In any case the majority of the competitors were wot through, a-ivi pne man went to tho length «t pouring his. own UiicKet of water over his own head, Most amusing, too, was tho boot race. "' [t bo explained that a boot race is fT ° r^, n ' for . the most part, without jr " n 1 UStiivl articte are collect, ed irom all those who cuter, and mixed up m a barrel. .An amusing medley takes place when, the rightful owners search for them, and, in tho race under notice, the seamen threw the boots in all Emotions. Many pairs could imt be recovered at the time. A niegapijoiio message fixed matters, however, finders be™e r a »,.|<i return the boots to Ji.iU.b. i. J liilomel. An interesting cutlass display was also given by the men from tie warship. The results of the bluejackets' sports were:—

Bncket-of-water Race.—Carr and Wardle, 1. . the Happy Dancers. There ■ wore many oftcr attiadtiojis, Tlio Cadets contributed a. highly realistic sham-fight. .Abmrt 100 <jf tlieiii, mider command of CaiitaiH I'fandi, had manned a fort, and ivere sittiijg bcliind a bis camp fire, when, out of the blaeit•ness of the night, e.amo t;ho sharp fire of rifles. Those in the fort simulated a determined military resistance, but an advancing line of flashes showed that the invaders wcro gaining' ground. Then the searchlight flashed across tho scene, and fully four hundred eadots roso_ up and rushed the fert. tt v?as a stirring scene, and within a low Minutes the fort was a rna.ss -of flames, having heon fired by the i»ecessfui attackers.

To the majority of those present this was an interesting spectacle, alfthongh nothing in the nature of (lyiftji was attempted. Mr. Soltaoff mounted tlie seat of liis monoplane, and, ftftftf the engine had been get in motion, circled tho park sevef.il times, .the, machine moving HgliUy m'cv the ground. _ The . trial dcnioiT.sir>irid tiwt the engine was capable of lifting the machine, and nlso showed how control was maintained. . ■ .
Tlio closing; scene Was a eaTiiival dance in the moonlight-. It was, to a great number, the mast enjoyable oi'jHit of. tho evening, and great numbers 'of dnncers hastened to- take part in it. The dancing was kept goifig tilj a lato hour, and the carnival was thus brought to a fittinn; eo«cl«sioiH, Apart from the >ala at N(»wtowia Park there are still & number ftf fenelions to be.held in connection with tlio carnival.
