As on tho previous occasion, Mr. Fred Oswald gavo an explanation of tho origin of tho tango, which was, ho said, danced some hundreds of yeais agu in Spain at fairs and festivals, travelling With tho Spaniards to South America, and finally making its wav to Paris, ' England, mid now Australia. So far it would appear to bo the rng-timo tangos, that havo caught tho people's fancy m Sydney, dimcea that arc not - 60 graceful as tho tango proper. Miss Maurice and Mr. Oswald gavo an exhibition of the tango, and later .on gavo , tho Argentino tango, which was, perhaps > somowhat more complicated in steps and ' movements. With the tango girls, Mr., Oswald gavo an exhibition of rag-timo variations of tho dance; Miss Ncllio Fallon and Mr. Mareolle danced tho }n-' spiriting "hacienda tango," and Miss Buscli, who is a clover dancer, and full of vim, gavo a Spanish danco". Miss Grace Palotta with Mi. Oswald charmed •_ tho audience with a tango, and later on in tho programme, sung to her own accompaniment, "Hello, Tutu I" with' a Gern'ian song as an encore. Miss Mabel Batoliclor sung, "Lo! Hero .tlio Gcutl<t. Lark," tho lluto obbligato being played by Signor Chcccucci, arid Miss ' Carrie. Moorb was another contributor to tho programme, with "Love Thy Neighbour." Ono of tho very onjoyablp features of tho afternoon wore tho Dickens sketches ' which wero given by Mr, F. Bartonfrom "Littlo Nell," "Oliver Twist," "Tho Piokwiek Papers," and "David Copper-field," impressive hi spito of 1110 fact that he had not tho adventitious aids of scenery or dress. A rag-timo song and dance by tho Mullanoy Twins and a tango'rovuo by M'r\ Oswald and tlio tango girls completed a distinctly interesting and enjoyable cnteitaiumoiit, ono that i\Vis entirely new to Wellington.
