MAN'S TO HIS- WIFE,

James.Jlil)3, a labourer, was charged h'efonT thi) Magisrate. to-day with . asr saultirig his wifo with intent to do .actual bodily harm on October .18. Accused went home : intoxicated, and his /wifo then, went, and brought his Sunday beer,- which,' on returning, she hid; Accused then wanted a drink, but. was refused. Ho Presented this refusal, pushed his wife, and she fell, and broke a leg. She then crawled'into tho yard to get out of accused's way, and returned, to tho house when her husband had gone to bed. She sat in the kitchen until ho woko and lifted her into, bed, where .sho remained until Tuesday. A ..neighbour called' in a doctor that evening,": arid she was removed to tho Hospital. Sho did .not know that her leg was broken until the doctor'came. ■ The;doctor said that Mrs. Mills might, nover recover from tho elfects of tho injury.. Accused pleaded guilty, and Was committed to tho'Supremo Court for sentence.,
AN INJURED TROTTINO, HORSE. CLAIM AGAINST A CLUB. ' ChrJstchurch, March 6. At the Supremo Court, Clifford Tasker (Mr. Raymond) claimed £790 damages from the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club (Mr. Russell), in respect of injuries sustained by tho' horse, Michael Galindo, Tho horso was training on tho. clubs ground at Addington,* when it collided with adraught maro owned, by the club. It Tan away, and' sustained injuries which put it out of training. Tho horso had won three racc3 in four starts previously. SENSELESS HOAX. Creymouth, March 6. A bottle picked tip on tho beach contained tho following message:—-"Send out the tug or rcscuoboat at once,- 16 miles south of Sevon ,Mile." It was signed by several persons known in. Greymouth. Steam was got up'on tho Harbour Board's whon it was discovered the, messngo Was a hoax! -The party had been.out flshing : on Sunday last.-' They admit. it was a. 'senseless joke, and mado no further explanation, except that thoy wanted,to's'eo what became of it.

BIG BRIDGE DESIGN. FOR NAPIER INNER'HARBOTJR., ,','...,.. .'..'','.• NapiJer, March 6. : A copy of' the ,plan •of tho" proposed bridge across the.inner'harbour on tho East Coast railway lino has been received by the Hawko's Bay 'County Counoil from' the. Public-" Works Department. The bridge will measure 1232 ft. in length, and consist of 26 spans, of which one will bo,s7ft. 4in..long, twenty-' one 50ft. long,-and five 25ft. long. The width of the bridge will be about 4'sft., allowing 14ft. for tho railway, 18ft. for roadway, and 6ft. for a footway.

CRIMINAL TRIALS. Invercarglll, March 6. At the Supreme Court txi-day, before Mr.'Jn'stico Sim, 'William Preston, convicted of robbery with violence, was sen. fenced to threo yeare' hard labour and declared a habitual criminal. 'Charles Price"was found not guilty of assaulting and .wounding Katherine Price.
