The Taluno brings a report that the outlying islands of the Cook Group were swept by a hurricane during the second week of January. The hurricane swept Shell Island, and caused mountainous spas to swamp Rakahanga and Manihiki. The natives were compelled to take to bouts until the storm had subsided. Considerable damage has been done to crops. Tho islands lie very low, and wero completely submerged. Aitutaki Island was in the track of the' storm, but sustained less damage. The storm arose suddenly. After, passing over the Shell Group, it spent itself on Cook Islands. An unnamed' schooner known to have been in the vicinity'of the hurricane has not since been reported. It is feared sho went down.
