A iiew rifle champion for Neiv Zealand will-be turned out to-day, when the King's Prize Match' will be fired at Trentham. During the week riflomon havo been straining evory nervo to got a place in the coveted King's Fifty, who are to lire off in tho final shots. The King's is fired from 1000 yards, and whi.lo many good scores are put up,on this range, on,ordinary occasion's, it.is seldom that a big score is registered when tho deciding match is fired. It is the knowledge that many eyes are keenly watching each shot that upsets tho aim of a rifleman, and he is lucky indeed if ho puts 40 on for his final ten shots. Last year 44 by Rifleman AV. K. Williams, Ohura R.C.,' was tho highest score, and there was one 41 and two 40's., Last'.'year's champion, who had'a commanding lead in tho aggregat-d matches, only scored 31. This was Rifleman' F. H. James, Okawa R.C. James has been firing during the present meeting, but has not mot with' any success, and will riot lie on tho firing mound this afternoon; ■ Ycstorday . long range matches were continued, and the shooting had a deciding eff# -oil. were made 'up ing.broke fine and clear, and wheri'tho first man -wont'-'down, at 800 yards',, for the'Otagd Match; shooting .condition's were ideal. President W. N. Masefield, Sounds, who figured fourth,in tho aggregate at the moment, was fortunate in going'down; first, and so struck a "good patch," as'they say on the range. He'put on 47 at the first range, and, moving liack to' 1000 yards, made 46. This made him tho winner of the match, with a score of 93. Two others, Riflemen H: Loveday 60 —43, and A. Henderson '49—44 also got 93. The former is a.yoilng man; hut belongs to a family prominently connected with rifle shooting. Eariy morning indications 'of a fine shooting- day were not realised, for a stiff northerly breeze sprung up, and had an effect on the shooting of the later men. Riflemen A. A. Oliver Lad a - bad fall in tho Otago - Match. He startcit with a leading aggregate in the championship series of 449, and increased this with a good score of 47 at 80d yards. Going down at 1000 yds. his sightcr was a miss.' Hisfirst counting shot Was also of no avail, and with liis second shot he only managed to get a three. He finished up with another miss, and his score read: 0—342234450—27. It was hard luck, but' an experience that a rifleman has tn look for at any time. Rifleman A. Henderson, who is a club-mato of Masefield, got a great lift up in the aggro- . gate by his score, and other prominent men who did well wore: Rifleman. Milroy, 89 j. Lieutenant Simmonds, 84; Rifleman' Given; '80; Rifleman J. Cheeseman, 88;• Rifleman'Moselen, 81; Rifleman M'lntosh, 89. Possibles at 800 yard 3 were scored by. Rifleman H. Loveday, Ohura R.O.- Riflomau : T.' Carter, Nelson R.C.; Sergeant A. - Flynn.. .'3rd Regiment; Rifleman •L. P. ' Wis'to, Christchurch RiC.; Rifleman W : . B. Clark, Rangitikei R:C.; Rifleman Ball, Linton R.C.
The last match (the Taranaki, at 1000 yards) counting in the King's aggregate, was fired in the afternoon. . M/iny new names figured in the prize-list, while a number of the leading men did not find the range to their liking. President Masefield again did well. His first counter was a 4, followed by n "bull," then a magpie. With his nest shot In.' again got tho centre of tho target, and-never .lost it, finishing up with 47. A round of applause was given him for this excellent performance.- President Masefield is now leading in the King's aggregate by a good margin, and is a strong favourite for tho Belt. His win would be popular. Although this was a good- score at 1000 .yards, it was not the best, tho winner being Rifleman Vennall, Te Wharau, who put oil an excellent 48. Oliver only got 31, and others who were- prominent were: H. Loveday, Ohura, 45; Lieut. Duncan, 4-t; Rflmii; Bull, Linton, 43; Rflmn. Maunsell, 45; Rflmn. Thurston, 42; Rflmn. Eyles, 39: Rflmn. D. Loveday, 40: Rflmn. Browlee, 45. . ; '
• Majof-Gencrnl Goclloy'and Mrs. Godley, accompanied by Lady Sybil Grey, paid a visit to the range yesterday afternoon, and witnessed trie snap-shoot-ing in the final for the Servico aggregate. ■ . ■ The Championship will he fired a,t 2.30 this afternoon, and the prices will afterwards be awarded by Mrs. Collins. . The Service Championship. The Servico Championship proved very interesting. The first range was snapshooting at q ' head target . from 200 yards. .The target appeared five times, being exposed for four seconds each time, and seven points being given for each distinct hit; At 500 yards a figure target was used, being exposed for one minute, and during that period tho competitors fired ten shots, while at 600 yards tho same target was used, being exposed five times for twenty seconds. \ " THE KING'S FIFTY.
