Twenty runners, many of them as green as could be, lined up at the barrier for the Maiden Plate. After some slight delay the barrier was lifted to an indifferent start, caused by the frnetiousness of several of tlie runners.'' Now York and Rangiwhetu were quickly at the head of affairs, and Hi from Montaiio and Vladineau. The positions were the same till 'well down tlie straight, when Montane got through on the fence, and won by a neck. New York, a half-brother to Mahee, was close up third, and .then came Vkitfncau and Miss Lena. Mystified, tlie second horse, did not get out of the ruck till late, but she literally flew at the finish.
Aleoto, Armature," Qtakura, and Silver Jinile were withdrawn froai the Hoes Welter, for which Firing Line was ly better supported than Bodeiiham. The favourite won, and tho.latter was lost, but the field was bunched at the finish. A'- the start the favourite jumped off hi front, but was palled in boltijfd, Wd Combustion, with St, Elme, carried oft the lead from Merry Jftpk, with the two public fancies in behind. In the straight Firing Line came fast, and won in a hollow fashion., jlorry Tack was a length clear of Combustion. St. Eimn was i'onrtb.
Several new' two-year-otds were introduced'to tho public in the Nursery Handicap, and- ono -of theni—Elevonia —nia-de a particularly good showieg. She is a half-sister,- by Elevation, to Merrivonia,' and promises to haye a siiecessM career. At the start La Pavoii'rita Jumped Out well, but she was immediately supplanted by Elevonia, who • showed eohsulerable pace; to the turn, whe*e she ran off the course. La Favourifa was then left in front, but Tavistock soon headed her, and ran in a comfortable winner. Indigo drow.au outside position at the barrier, but she finished fast, and get second place. Elevonia was. close Up fourth. F. ■ Tilley started Ararat and Protocol. The former jumped out Weil, but could not go the pace, Protocol jumped back at the start, <tfld lost her position. ■ ■■■ .
Kooya was Tehandicapiied to vst. 71b. in the Cup, but she was the 'Absolute favourite, and - after a nice race she just struggled hoihe in front' of Settlor, who ran a good race. Eocene Was. tho first to break the line, but Pereeler to»k charge at the end of a furlong, and led for a mile, when Settler ran. to the front. In the straight Kcrayh cams oh the scene with a late run, and just beat the chestnut gelding. Braebiifn, who was prominent the whole Way, was third, and Tricze fourth. Lord Benown ran very badly, and has trained right o-ff. Eocene hung out badly at. the tMns, and failed to see the distance out. Mar.garaa ran prominently to'the turn, where she faded out of it. N Papalitz • was backed dawn to . a rery short price in the Hurdles, but his backers.got a fright When they saw him stumble after going a chain, and his rider hanging round his Beck, Young then made a wonderful Teeo'vers, and sot out after the field. H the first fence he was giving the lenders fully one hundred yards' start, but he was within striking;'distance of them at the stand, and, going 011, ho won Very easily, Stockartv was third, and Marblehoad next. The winner was laino behind on returning to the paddock. It was practically a flat race, for, the winner, as all the fenses were knockod dov/ri for him.-
Of the 17 accepters for' the Electric Hack Handicap only six went to the point. No one wanted to be on imyttiijg but Zeus, and tho Martian gelding staffed at a very short price. After indulging Powder Fox and Af.Vstigod with the lead to' the straight, Oliver then., brought tho favourite out, and lie won very easily. Mystified and Sir Alba were together at' the finish, and Powder IW was ete« ut>, Mysteriach was heavily supported in tho Welter, but he failed by a head, and the second .favourites-Mescal—scored. Montreal made the paee- very fast for half a'mile, with Parewaflui handy, and the twp favourites were last, Round the bend Mescal went out and got a break. In the straight Mysteriach tried to Overhaul him, but: failed by a head, Evadno was only third favourite in. tho conclading event, but she did not have much trouble in scoring, L. Wilson (on Orleans) acted as nntiler-un for Hie third time during the afternoon. . Ladii'y, tho third horso, 'just beat Ki.go Part.'
