SOUTH AFRICAN BILL PASSED. SENSATION IN LABOUR RANKS. "WORSE THAN RUSSIA" By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright "Times" and Sydney "Bun" Services. Johannesburg, March 2. The passing of tho Peace Preservation Bill caused a sensation.
The Labour Party lias declared that Africa is becoming worse than Russia, through tho deportation question heing made- a principal feature.
For tho Transvaal Provincial Council Labour is expecting to win several seats, in accordance with' their successes at tho recent principal elections. Mr. Tom Mann will sail on Saturday for tho Cape. He denies that Larkin and Tillett are going there.
DEPORTATION AND BANISHMENT . CONFIRMED. (Rec. March 3, 11.10 p.m.) ■ Cape Town, March 3. Mr. J. X. Mcrriman, in tho Union Assembly',, moved the deletion of the banishment clause, and declared that there was no foundation for the deportations except prejudice. The Government asked the House to join it in committing a crime. Tho lawlessness of the deported men had been to a certain extent condoned by the lawlessness of the Government.
'i'ho motion was rejected without division, and the clause confirming the deportation and banishment of tho strike leaders was carfied by 72 votes to 15.
.LABOUR APPEALS TO GENERAL BOTHA. (Rec. March 4, 0.35 a.m.) . : London, March 3. Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald (Labour M.P.), on.behalf of tho joint Labour organisations, has cabled General Botha to remember the attitude of British Labour when South Africa, went to war, a.nd withdraw the banishment clauso from tho Peace Preservation Bill. .
General Botha replied that he was much impressed by the appeal, but he felt convinced that such withdrawal would not be in tho best interests of organised Labour in South Africa.
