, .•', .■':NEEDS'OF EXPORTERS. , Tho question of,the desirability of -renewing the mail contract between Wellijlgton '"arid San Francisco, and of '•: the ■ terms', ori which, such'a ■contract ought . to be renewed, were discussed in private c6nferenco yesterday morning by representatives of the Government, exporters, and tho Union Steani Ship Company. 'The Hon.' W- F. Massey ' (Prime Minister) presided, 'and the PostmastorGeiioral (tho Hon. R. H. Rhodes) was also., present. Messrs. C. Holdsworth and R. M'K. M'Lennan'-reoresented the UnioivComnanr, Messrs. J.-B. Al'Ewan ■nndiJv.G. Harkness the Wellington exporters;" and Messrs. Wilson and Pacey the Auckland exporters. The discussion centred on tho following points:—(l) 'A proposed- flat; rate for tho carriage of dairy produce from all New Zealand ports; (2) the need for more cold storap\ and more refrigerated space on/.iisteamers, trading between New Zealand * arid San Francisco; (3) the system of booking β-pace in advance, which the exporters claimed did not always wotk satisfactorily. Some details wore left by ■ the conference to bo 'discussed between . representatives ,of:'the Union Company and the exporters, and after these details have been settled the Prime Minis-, ter and the Postmaster-General.will,cn-dqavour to arrange for a renewal of the contract linder more satisfactory conditions than appear to exist at present.
