THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.

.Before, a large audience, last- evening Mis;; C. \V. Qhristio delivered a ibcttfro'on ,"Th© of Pa«t Lives: How to Recover it." 'The lecture is the'first of a series' Miss Christie has arranged • to give here'during March and April. ' The lecturer pointed out the necessity for reincarnation, and the continuity of life to explain the apparent injustice of the Divine law, in the inequality of birth and the differences of tho inherited character of souls born into the world. The explanation of this was that we were Soiils, and take bodies' • suited for our needs, and according to our stage of. evolution. Nearly all people, even those belonging to. less civilised 1 races, had a haunting memory of past existence on earth, which manifested itself in many different ways.- One of the best known of these was conscience, which was really the sub-conscious memory of the. painful effects of actions. The strong *likes or dislikes sometimes felt , between people on first meeting might bo tho rsult of painful or pleasant experiences of a past incarnation, while the haunting memory of having been before in some strange place visited for the first time has been to some tho first proof 'of a previous existence there.

In many tho power .to recall the memory of tho past lies latent, and only needs the necessary occult training to be fully aroused, a. training, however, demanding a- life of careful asceticism for the controlling and refining of the mail's various vehicles. ■ ■

Miss Christie's next lecture will be delivered on Wednesday, her subject being: "Thought Power, and its Application.'.'
