MOUNT HECTOR.
Sir, I was very jleased to read a letter on the above in yotrr journal Of February 24 from the pen of Mr. L J.' Ihilhjis, of Kaifcoke. To have mora than one approach to that delightful mountain would be a real advantage, and I trust, the route advocated by him . will become as popular as the 'Greytowtt track. Ho speaks of ail easier and quicker route, _ and better scencry via Kaitoke. 1 will admit that the track ho champions may b.o shorter, hut my scheme is iiot io get the . quickest route, but tlui olio with the best scenic effects, aisd this I claim is via Mount Reeves. From Greytowit aji easier route can bo chosen. further up tho Wiiohiue, but nty committee chose Mount- Hooves because it serves two purposes. If a party waitis a day's ■o-uting it can go to Reeves only. • and from th-ero g&t a splendid panorama of all tho Wanarapa, to Pallisor Bay southwards, ana beyond Masteirtoli northwards. Should the party desire 1 a : further ramble it can go ilowit to tho Tauherinikau Valley, and enjoy tho lovely scenic effects obtained there.; up the valley you wander towards tlio coiie and round Bull Mound; or take the down trip and saunter to your heart's eonlent. Then again, for a longer jaunt, you ascend Bull Mound and. wend your way round Omega and on. to Alpha. Here, my committee intend erecting -a hut for th© convenience of tourists, and my friends from Kaitoko w-jfl bo welcome to use it, as this will be a corntoon meeting-ground for both tracks. From hero wo journey along hand in hand, and no doubt my committee will bo pleased if tlm ICaitokeiics will here give its >omo assistance for our mutual benefit.. I would not look oil Kai-to-ke as a rival route, hut as' one that : can eoniojn with us for a joint beno.tit. Mr. Phillips speaks of doing bis route ill two days; Mr, W. H, Field and party have clone the Qtakt-'G toy town route in! that time, but those, generally, who ' take, this sort of enjoyment do not wish i to rush through. Tho object is to dixservc the, configuration of "God's Ownf ■Country/' to see mountain after mouu-1 tain to right and to left of them as tlie.y ' journey along, and to see tho Sara anil fauna ' of tbo mountains ami valhsys. The luits to bo. erected on either side of fleokn are'to citable partii.-.s to lefs-; inely observo tho'-'loveliness of Nature, a nd "have time to marvel at thq stupendgu.s ts-ji.hoava'ls that ,hnvo taken place in this Dcsnicion.. tet Itaitoke, Otakij sad,
tho Wairarafa join liands aiid- assist in tho preservation of tlio wonders and beauties of Nature v? 6: have in our pos» session, and prevent tho ivanCou t-ioii of iiiir heritago by axo and. lire. Tho track now being made by tho Greytowii committee will serve- K.a-i'toko as well as Otaki, and very Mttlft money will be required to make. a. track from Kaltoko to Alpha, • This, summer it is hoped we will have a horse track instead of tho present crude oiio from Grey-town «v«r Hector to Qtitki. jjy 00-nimitteo meet to consider '.some, pro* positions . put before- it by i-t-r. W, Nathan, -an officer of tho l'uhlic Works Dopartmoitt. As soon, as these questions arcs settled work will bo goiio on witli, and wo Ifope to meet tho Otftki Committee at J lector with' the track they are makiivg out to that point, wihoh is our mutual objective.'—l am, etc., MARK M'AXTON. tireytowii, Fclmiary 25, 1!)!).
