The cause is unknown. Forty; hands Lave been thrown idle. . 1 There is an insurance in the Royal Exchange Offico of £1200. Tho-approxi-mate'.damage is £1000. ' The brigade effected a splendid save, anil after a great fight managed to confinethe flames to : tbe workshop, thus saving the block "of wooden buildings, mostly shops. A stiff sou'-wester was blowing.' When a constable paseed at 2.50 o'clock thero was no. sign of fire, but twenty minutes later he' heard a crackling, and saw smoke and flames .issuing from the building.
SHOP AND. DWELLING GUTTED; TitnarU) February 28. Early this morning, A. C. Kedylie, a shopkeeper on the; outskirts of'the town, being unwell, went "to the shoy for medicine. He fainted and dropped a lamp which set fire to the floor. Ho recovered in time to escape and call the neighbours who it was thought put out. Presently, however, tho fire brokd out again and the shop and dwelling wero gutted. ' • '
OUTBREAKS AT CARTERTON. . Carterton, March 1. At eight o'clock" last night a fire gutted a four-roomed cottage in Belvedere Street, owned by Messrs. Hadiey Bros,, and occupied by Mr. J. Callaghan. No one was at home at tho time. The firo had a good hold when discovered. The brigade saved the buildings next door. The building was insured, but not' the 'contents. Nothing was saved.
At 3.30 this morning a six-roomed Jibus'e v iii Park Road, belonging to the Parker: Estato, was discovered ablaze. The building had only been vacated-a week, and another tenant was to have taken possession 'this week. Tho origin of the fire is\ a complete mystery. Thero is an insurance, but tho amount is not available at present.
