Second Day. Opening Match: President W. N.' Masefield, Sounds Riflo Club, 101. Auckland Match: Corporal Cbing, Royal New Zealand Artillery, 98. A\Tien tho riflemen arose'at Trentham yesterday, morning Dame Nature had decked the range with a hoary covering. .- Tho' early frost-was mid-winter like in its intensity, but a bright tlay was forecasted, -in: striking contrast to the ivoather conditions on the openingj day. Trentham was at_ its' best yesterday, and riflemen fell into their squads "at 8 a.m. in/brilli&nfc sunshine. This lasted , throughout y the whole day, tho sun's rays being tempered with a cool brfceze. A four-point right wind was blowing; when shooting began, and many riflemen Vent through to tho lunch adjournment with tliis wind. During the afternoon, when, the first Belt match'was fired,' the wind died away a little, and shifted ..round the range, blowing in from the right. ,Treiithem rango is notorious r for its rtiany prevailing winds, but' yesterday little complaint. coulcL be made. The light was bright, a little too much' so for tho opening ranges. ■ Shooting commenced in. earnest yesterday, when a start Was made with the "C" Series. The Opening Match' was fired first, at ranges. 300, 600, ami COO yards, the figiiro target being used for thotwo lesser Special provision! was. made in this match for tlie tyros, as is tlie case in all the C series, and the total prize money offered wa3 £100. The shooting was' good, no fosver thsvn seven ''possibles" being-put on at 'the shorter ranges.

CAMP JOTTINCS. His "Worship tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), accompanied by Mrs. Luke, 'visited "the rango yesterday afternoon, and were shown round by Colonel Collins. Tho Mayor is a, vice-president tho association, and " so pleased was ho with the arrangements iie. saw yesterday that ho told Colonel Collins- he would send out a cheque for £2 25., to bo given-as a special prize.: • The following clubs liavo entered for tho Itifle Clubs Championship Teams' Match, over , 6hort-distauco. rangos:— Aucklaijd City, , Rangicikoi, Kapo'nga, Inglawood, .Taumarina, Akarana Nos. 1 • and 2, Christchurch,; Te Aroha, Suburbs Nos.' 1 and 2, Linton/ Nos. 1 'and 2, Opaki, Nos. 1, 2, and .3, Ohura, Okawa, Nos. l .and 2, Sounds. ' With three matches in- ( for the, Service Aggregate fired,'/ Dfummond, Senior Cadets,'* D'annevirko, is leadingj a Drummojig 9fllM}ik,op',l7 iAJhp snapshooting; match, good''win. in the Classification , Practice:: with 112 points to'his credit, tho'next best manibeing Rfimn. W-.-.Drunimond, Karori, 111. . ..', . • „

In order to make a punctual start with all matches, a: halt-crown .fine is beinp; imposed on late'-comprs to the assembly..,'-- .This, fino has to .be paid before the first' shot is fired,, and in all cases it is being.enforced. , •

The "Itunhing Jlan" will attempt to evade the bullets of. riflemen to-day, and tSo miniature range will also come, into operation ior tho first time.- The miniaturo ra.ngo is. a new innovation at l'rentham, ..but will evidently be popular, as a-great number of entries 'are assured for. the matches. • . -

Over 70 entries have been recevicd for the "D" Scries matches,'for tyros. Tho judging distance competition was continued yesterday evening, after tho conclusion of tho Auckland Match: This competition ruris in connection with the sorvicc series,, and eight .points arc selected- at various' distances, not exceeding 1400 yd.. .
