Makara put in a claim, but could not reach Pavlova who won by a good length and a halt, with Lady Volga clo3e ii|j. Time, lmin. iosec.
NOTES ON THE RACING. | (By Telosraph— Special Heportcr.) . ' Wanganul, February 26. -.!-. A strong wind blew across tho course all day, and made matters very unpleasant for the crowd. Two official inquiries : wfgi! held—first intoscme bump-, lng by' Way in the first race,'] and .secondly into .the ownership of Tho Rover. The ollicial placings were not disturbed. - ■•■.<: : Emperador and Allegation were withdrawn from the' Stewards' Handicap, leaving seven runners. Patronale and Expect .were the best backed, and tho latter won very decisively at tho finish after '{getting none too.. good a run— a fate-which also befell Patronale. Running;;alorig the back, Coromandel and Passadeha wore at the head of affairs, •with the two - favourites last. . 'The roan wason'the outside of four horses as .they.turned into tho straight, and ho.was'-quickly in difficulties; Expect, then shot >'oiit. and won comfortably-. Guiding Way was a neck in front of Merry Frank:
Historiette; Princess Moutere, and Princess Moutoa carried the bulk of the money in the Pctre Haudicnp. ■ - From a good start, Aratiatia soon took charge and passing the half-mile- he was en the fence, just clear of His Eminence, with Historietto and Firing Lino next; Princess Moutoa was in second place at !:vtho..'.distanee, and, finishing strongly, slie; woro down Aratiatia. Histori- [ etto got. into third place in . tho last ;couplo of. strides. Brunswick- was | fourth, and Belaseo fifth. : , .'... Bereola ; was making his first appear- ' ance in a jumpers' lace this season, but tho gonoral opinion was that-ho was a class 'above tho others, which were n'ell up with him in tho weights. He favourite, but though the race was run-to suit iiim, ho failed badly, and could onlv finish a poor third. Timothy set a very fust pace for twelve furlongs,'when Tho Hover ran up. to him,'.and won from there. Bereola was 20 lengths away third. : 'The; fivo .starters in the Hack Hurdles were-' all Veil backed. Wnipaku swung round .as/the tapes lifted, and lost a lot of ground. St. Gate and Aruake inado tho running from lluffyi with Taur'angi Sailed off.'. Passing the stand, Waipaku cut-;out the.fence, and this-spoilt-! her here .-joined .'St., Gate :in the lead; but tit' the' thrco-furlongs' Aruake again took charge,-and won by. several lengths. Waipaku.and were, a good'way back; '"•'"' *-f " The whole of the acceptors, wciit to jthe. post for the Cup. They"stripped well,/particularly Sea Pink, ; anil :.the [preliminaries attracted a lot of attention, Bon Ton going particularly well. After the start Cheddar was the first to become prominent; and was followed by Bon Ton and Moutoa Girl, Sir Solo, Byron, and Los Angelos, with Sir Knox whipping the field. .-Bon Ton joined Cheddar at'the entrance to the straight, and the pair led from Moutoa Girl. As they passed the stand, the rear division were six lengths away, and in a bunch. Going to tho seven furlongs, the three leaders were unchanged, but Tiresome and ;Sinapis ran up to second place, followed by Los Angclos. At the-half-milo Sinapis was in second place, and Bon Ton . fell back. , Hound the bend the order-was Moutoa Girl,'Sinapis, Los Angclos, and Tiresome, and so i they ran into tho straight, but in the'run homo Sinapis^easily-scored by a iengtb,:with Sii Solo six lengths away, and then ' r came- Leonta, Marshal M'Doriald and Mariawakaha, -with the others strung, put.' .Byron, ran a really good race for a milo and a'half, and so did. Los Angolos, but the latter failed to stay on, after being well placed tho whole way. Sir Solo was bothered by tho pace in the early part of tho race, but was running on at tho finish. ■ '
Rencontre, ridden by ; an apprentice, failed to give a year arid 111b. to tho Charlemagne II ; filly Bradamante, who was allowed to pay a very fiilso price. Ringform raced well, and just headed Rencontre on the post. The latter was a hot favourite. She was mixed up at the start, and then ran very wide in /turning for home.
The Fordell-trained Record was favourite in the Wiritoa Hack Handicap, but, several of the others , wero well backed. At the start Canute stumbled, and lost a lot of ground. Running to tho six furlongs Record was in charge, but, a furlong further, Square Deal was taken to tho front, and led to within a 'few' Strides' of the post,- when both Lubriline and Centenary headed him. This is tho third consecutive win for Lubriline, who is still on. tho improve. Kimbonibi, a well-fancied candidate, finished fourth.
Heavy speculation was indulged in on the result ■' of tlie concluding race; Siiuoi finished up favourite, with Culprit next in demand, Makara gavo trouble at tho barrier, and, when it was lifted, ho: got out badly. ' Racing past the' fivo furlongs the leading division were Heather, Sunbird, Pavlova, Gipsy Belle, and Grattnn. Round tho bend Heather was just clear of Pavlova and Grat.tan, with Makara making . his ground fast. In tho run home Pavlova scored b.y. a length from Makara, with Lady Volga third. ' Makara was certainly tho unlucky horse, and,' with anything like a decent get-put, he would have won, easily. Culprit failed to see it out, after having every chance, and the ■ two SteadTOwned horses were amongst the last to finish.
