BOAT HARBOUR SCHEME , . DEFERRED. A. proposal that a boat harbour b« constriicted.at Petono was before the Harbour. Board,la,st night. Mr. J. \V. M'Ewan, who moved to the effect (Captain Watson seconding), urged that the board should undertake the' work. The plan showed a structure _of 2QO. feet, .or an alternativei'proposal[«/or, v a structure of 300 ft. The cost of the two schemes .would be £1660 and £2450 .jespectivelyi ancl > #iMi),u/ 1 1, jyouldr ■be £185 and £260 respectively. -Ho urged that tlio .bigger scheme Wadoptedj saying that.the board could easily recoup ritself for- the..expenditure - by making charges for boats' anchoring vfithiii tlio proposed boat harbour. Many craft of a class for which the : boat harbour was required were at Petone, and ho contended that the board would only be carrying out its functions to. provide for those who followed yachting. Mr. C. .E. Daniell said the board bad had one : unfortunate exneiience at Potone, in. the expenditure" of £9000 on a wharf which was now rotting and unused. ■ He.would not support the niotion. . . ■ ■: Mr. M'Ewan, replying to a remark '.by the chairman, eugpested that the board should content itself with such revenue as it might derive from the'use. of the boat harbour by boats. If the ;bqard ivould not consider tlio proposal with that understanding, he would ask the board to say what it would agree to, so that'ho could approach his council with a proposal that they should find part of the standing charges. He would suggest that the board- pay, say, half the annual charge, £130, leaving the rest to be found by the district. The chairman suggestcl that Mr. M'Ewan allow the motion to stand down until he • could give iiiformaton as to ,hbw much revenue would bo derived from boats using the harbour. . ,IVthis course Mr. M'Ewan .agreed.
