THE NEW JUDGE.

WARM WELCOME TO MR. JUSTICE HOSKING. , ''-, : The Wellington Bar was largely represented in the Supremo Court yesterday when' ah official welcome was tendered Mr. Jus'tico Hosking, who was recently elevated to the Supremo Court Bench. In' a. brief speech, the Hon. L. Hc'rdmau, Attorney-General, offered tho Bar's congratulations, respecting His Honour's elevation to the Bench. Mr. Herdman said that he believed that it was a,matter .for great congratulation that one who had worked so faithfully at.the Bar for so many years had attained a «eat of such high distinction and responsibility. In the past the relations between the Bench and the Bar had been of an exceedingly happy character. From the Bench, tho Bar had received courtesy and .kindness. . His Honours promotion was a gain to the Bench and a loss to tho Bar. Tho Bar lost, a practitioner with whom it was a very great pleasure to work, and tho Bench gained a man of very great experience, who would help to uphold its honour. Mr. Herdman expressed a hope that, His Honour's career would bo long and;valuable, and that His' Honour would' enjoy a life full of. happiness. . Replying,. His Honour , said that it was .most kind of 'the Bar to assemble in such largo, numbers to welcome him, and .he thanked them, and thanked the Attorney-General for his generous words. It'was,- of .course, gratifying to .know that his appointment had mot .with'-approval. He, did not come to Wellington a andi he already knew the power and ability of the Wellington Bar, from 'whom ho.'was sure he would receivo'grcat help. "If," concluded' His Honour, "when I lay down my office, I shall, meet with approval at your hands as warm as the welcome you have given me to-dav, I' shall be even more gratified than I am .now."
