ATHLETES AND THE CARNIVAL.
'An, ■unfortunate position has arisen in connection with the Auckland athletic carnival ■ set down for March 14 (says tho "Herald"), at which it -was expected tho American athletes would be competitors. For some time past thoTocal centre has been ondeavonring to have iho timo of tho departure of the San Francisco boat:-on that day altered from 10 a.m. till 6: p.m. The Americans will be returning to their home land , by that steamer. So far the efforts of the centre have met with no success, anijl although hopo. has not yet been given iip, it lias been, decided that should the shipping company not grant the concession, tho carnival shall bo abandoned.
