LOCOMOTIVE MEN.
(By Tolezraiyta-Pree» Association.! Chrlstchurch, February 20. The conference of the' Now Zealand Locomotive Engine Drivers', Firemen's, and ■Cleaners' Association resumed today. '■' . . . Strong ■ exception was taken to tho Railway Department placing cadets from: engineering departments on tho footplato during their apprenticeship, in lieu •of certificated firemen. It was held that tho practice is dangerous, as lmcertih'cated workmen on locomotives did.not contribute to safe train -running. To come from au office to a footplate was too big a step to bo satisfactory. It was decided to ask that engineering cadets, during their apprenticeship, should be placed on the footplate only in addition to the firemen required by the regulations. In regard to tho remuneration of delegates to tho conference, it was decided-, to adhere to the i--resent differential ratos. , , ' . It was decided to continue the present contract with the general secretary. In addition, arrangements for the extension of his holidays are to be made. Tho conference discussed the question of improving the "Loco Record," the official organ of the association. General satisfaction.was expressed with the past editorship of Mr. W. M'Arley, and it was unanimously decided to extend the present contract under tho samo arrangements. It was decided that tho conference should meet every two years in Christchurch.
