DOUBLE SURF TRAGEDY.

A. sad surfing, fatality occurred at Grcenhills to-day, resulting in' tho deaths of Mr. Lan Galloway,- physical instructor under the Education Department, and Cyril Soar, aged 17 years, tho sou .of tho schoolmaster at Cqlac, and attending tho Southland High School. ,- The tragedy occurred on a "back" beach, with a good' 1 sandy base,- but a heavy undertow. The'tido was going out at tho'' time, and no life appliances were in the .vicinity. The occasion was that' of the. High' School picnic, and some of ■ tho boys who. wereswimming presently noticed that Soar was'in difficulties, and was being carried seaward by tho undertow. Mr. Galloway, a strong swimmer, went to his assistance,.and had no difficulty in reaching' him. s He struggled against, tho tide with Soar, but made no headway,' and it was soon apparent that both wero being washed to'sea. ■ -

Mr. Royd Garlick, Director of Physical Education, informed a Dominion reporter' last night that Mr. Galloway has a very conscientious, painstaking, reliable officer, a man who had the respect and confidence of teachers wherever he went, and a maiywho certainly had a careor boforo him in the physical education scheme. The deceased was 34 years of nge, and he leaves .a widow. . ■ '■. •
