THE POULTRY INDUSTRY
(By Chantecler.)
; A Successful circle, Tho annual balance-sheet of the Wairarapa Egg Circle is to hand, and, as usual, makes interesting reading. The circle continues its goad work, and is an oxamplo to all poultry producers. Its success is largely duo to tho splendid services of tho secrotnry, Mr. -Bodding°'h. whoso original idea's and business ability, keep the circlo up to date. Few movomelits are doing so much for tho egg trade as. tho egg circles. They ensuro a better article being placed on the market-r.clean and graded, and guaranteed fresh. Tho public aro learning to-ask for their eggs,'and their improved quality improves tho price- to the producer. The report prill bo read with great interest, Government Assistance. -Thoro arp signs that tho Government intend to cfo more for the poultry industry. : According to a Toquest from •tho New Zealand Poultry Association,' tho Department is now conferring with ■the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club to supqrviso the egg-laying competition at Christchurch. This will be a splendid: arrangement, as it will create greater confidence in the records., Under the Department for Agriculture, tho tost will bear the Government seal and ■tc/nd,-to remove any doubts that may exist.: while the. competitions ■ are'' being conducted by a private* club, A Second Test. . Some* of ■the North Island breeders are agitating for an egg-laying, competition to be run in tho north under Government supervision. While tho writer has ewr.v respect for their wishes, one is inclined to think that at tho present juncture it would be unwise to urge for -a second test in New Zealand. Tho present competition found some difficulty last year in filling ifc pens, and to have tests half filled would soon: ruin their work. < Now that tho Department is. likely to take over tho eouthern test, it should provosuffi.cient. , After all, one test teaches us as much as half a dozen would do. It is only a repetition , 'of cvidenco to havo more than one. > The Conference. • Matters aro moving well for a successful .conference.. The local committee aro determined to shako the dry bones of poultrydoni, and get their industry placed on a firmer basis. Tho New Zealand Poultry Association will bo the- mouthpiece for their requests to ■the Department, .and the solicitations of private, individuals will bo discountenanced. Tho Department oE Agriculturiymust feel somewhat perplexed with the. numerous, requests and opinions of correspondents, so many of them being contradictory. The questions at issue ehould bo discussed at the conference, and decisions submitted to the Department through the association. An Egg Circle's Figures. Tho fourth annual report of the-Wai-! rarapa Egg , Circle has the. following :— The year.under review has been, like its three- predecessors, most successful. in every way, though the new members elected during the; year did not reach the same totalas for the previous year, only 22 joining as against 35. The membership^of tho circle riow_stands..at. 114, as against 120 for last year.
