NOTES ON THE RACING.
CBr Telegraph.-Special Jlenorter.) Dunedln, February I!). Tho machine, showed that Kingsway was expected to improve on his first day's showing in the Hurdles. Of the others Jack Ashore and Daylight Bill were heavily backed. The investments
I were a good guide, for the two first favourites paid the dividends. At tho start Kingsway led from Daylight'Bill with Pure Gold, Bravest, and Jack Ashore following in that order. The two last-named moved up round the back and racing to the second fence from home- they were ajongside Daylight Bill, .and just behind Kingsway. The latter held his own, and won easily from Jack Ashore who beat Pure Gold by a head. Daylight- Bill cut out a couple of fenoos, and Jack Asliore nlso made a couple, of costly «rrors.
The Henley Handicap was a duel between Silver Shield and Scotch Melody, and the latter—-a scorching hot favourite—2ot beaten by a head. Slogan, who was in the leading division most of the way, finished two lengths back in third place. Sir Brigid, who Was well fancied, broke the tapes once, and next time lie got left a couple of lengths. Flora Macdonald was withdrawn from the Anniversary Handicap owing to soreness. This left five runners and the betting favoured Masterpiece, Thrax, and Gapon. The last-named made the running from a bunched, field, and the race was a very pretty one to watch. In the straight tho-winner came fast on the outside and beat Gapon. by a head. The Cornet was half a length away, and their came Masterpiece and Ogie'r. Tlie new weight-foii-age race—the Hazlett Memorial Plate—brought aut five runners who represented four owners. Mr. L. C. Hazlett provided the winner in Sinter Radius who took charge at the harrier rise, and never let the others in. It Was a laen struggle for second-place, Saiici, Qlennnnan, and Peg fiuishing in a liifc. The "winner had a great reception from tfco public. The favourites—John, Barley Corn, and Judith—were out of a place at the finish of the Outrani Handicap, At the barrier the last-named caught the tapes and when she fjot disentangled the whole ■field was well clear of her. When thev settled down Sveaborg and My Glove were piloting the way,' but the latter soon went brtfk. Entering the straight Sveaborg was out by himself with the others bumping aflout a lot. Florjlihe, however,, shook herself cfcar in the run to the post, and easily • caiight Sveaborg,.but Miss Kolmnr could not get Up and finished third just clear of Vanquish. , .
, Ohudic and Altcar were, the only' ones backed in the Domain Handicap, and the latter got a flying.start and won' all .the way with Ohudic second ami Merton third. The winner Was boiifht out of a selling race at Trontham h>st month for 110 guineas, and lie is now a cheap horse to his new owner". ; ' '
Moult) started at a very short price in the City Handicap, and he scored a fluky win. Ohannilia began smartly, and looked, to. have the race in safe hooping, but"Jones, allowed her to come up theriso'too easily and, in the last few strides, Moult! got up and beat hefby a head. Wise Bird (Treadmill—Glenowlet), a good-looking filjy with a lot; of pace, was a poor third. H. Gray didthe/hat trick for the, second tim«V this season by scoring on Gnome in the last ovi'iit. The topweight had to cover a bit of , extra ground at the home'turn, but, over the last ".bit, he won easily, Rongahere cut the favourite, Russo, out of second money.
