The chairman delivered a lengthy address,_ mainly of interest to newspaper proprietors only. He stated that the' affairs of the association generally were ill a condition of efficiency and stability. Satisfactory arrangements' had been made for the cablo service for the. next three years, and_he pointed out that the association was now receiving fifty per cent, more than the number of cablegrams received five years ago. Summing up, tho chairman said:— "Reviewing the whole position, I may point out that the New Zealand Press Association possesses one of the most, complete cable services in the world." Mr. Fenwick complimented the chairman upon his able address, which he considered the best ever delivered before the association. It, was resolved that the address be printed and forwarded to v all shareholders.
The annual report and'balance-sheet were passed' on the motion of the chairman after a brief discussion. The report mentioned that a fresh agreement had been made with the Australian Cable Association and the right to use the Sydney "Sun" - and independent cable service* had been acquired for a term of years. During the year 550.435 words-of original cable news had been supplied, which was.more than double tlie number which used to be supplied a few years ago. It was mentioned that 72 papers now subsoribed to the association, of which all but four also take the cable services. Shares had been issued ■. to six new applicants during the 'year. '•.'■. , .Messrs. Brett,, Horton, Carson, and Pirani were re-elected to the directorate. An animated discussion took place on tho question.of the,next place of meeting. On the motion/of Mr. E. G. : Kerr, Timaru was finally selected. A number'of votes, of thanks,were passed to the directors'and staff, and the meeting also passed vote's expressing their hearty appreciation of the kindness shown, to them by the New Plymouth Borough Council, the local papers, and the people of New Ply-' mouth generally.. . .
