At the Privy Council's hearing of Clininiing Arnold's appeal, Sir Robert Finlay, K.C, on behalf of tJio appellant, emphasised the fact that he was not charging M'Oormkk with beinc guilty. ' ■ ' * A ' cable received in Novenibfer, 1912, stated: "Mr. Channing Arnold, editor of tin- 'Burma Critic/ was last mouth sentenced . to one year's impris.onme.iit for the defamation of the District Magistrate at Jl.erpi, whom ho neonsed of wwii-ily acquitting a British officer charged with the abduction of a native, girl. 'Truth' tfates that the officer is an Australian named H. B. M'Conpiek, D.8.0., who'is' iM-y a rubber planter at Victoria Point. Mr. Arnold, who is n scm of the iato Sir Edwin Arnold, alleged, that Mr. Andrew, the Magistrate; ''at' -fesui, was a friend of M'Cormick ami that the whole inquiry was irregular."
