SIR IAN HAMILTON.

DISMISSION.

Australia & the pacific.

By Telegraph—Press Aasociatlon-Copyileht

(Rec. February 17, 8.10 p m.)

Sydney, February 17. General Sir lan Hamilton, InspectorGenoral of tho Overseas Forces, arrived to-day. In an interview ho said: "Certainly my object is to standardise tho forces within certain limits. If you get totally different descriptions of units, trained in tactically different manners, you do no good. For example, if units are supplied with different kinds of ammunition it is very detrimental to tho efficiency of the combined forces. At the samo time each branch of tho nation has its own characteristics, usually well suited to military tactics, that would develop in the respective States, and therefore considerable latitude must be allowed."

Speaking at the Lord Mayor's reception. Sir lan said that there had arisen in tho Pacific basin. forces and nations formerly negligible, but now assuming formidable proportions. It might be that the next place of great military struggles would be in tho Pacific. If wo cast our eyes round we could see a ring of armed nations, with Australia in the middle of the ring. Those nations were looking in a formidable manner at Australia. It was important that tho people of Great Britain should know that the peoplo out here are not waiting until the danger absolutely arrived, but were taking tune by the forelock.
