' "PERSONAL ATTACKS,"; ' . (By ■ Tolegraph.-Special Correspondent.) ■'- . ;, :Naplßr, February 17. '. >At a'meeting of the-Napier- Harbour Board to-da,y a letter was received from MivE. 'A. Cullen.an' Australian. eugir r.eer, who reported on.tlie harbour question some time ago, declining .to adyise the board on the most suitable dredge to procure. /-Mr. T. Clark said that he could easily; understand how it was that Mr. Cnllen found himself unablo to comply with tho" wishes of the board. He did not think that self-respecting men would knowingly subject themselves to tne bitter personal attacks which had been niade. Mr. Clark then read the following extract from a letter written by' Mr. Cullen to him.— ' ."■ "You will probably be ; ed that I have felt unablo to fall in with the Harbour Board's wishes, , '.. and have replied declining to act. 1 : note that a bitter personal feeling still animates a part'of tho public - : mind on harbour matters, when prominent men indulge in personalities publicly, as has happened over . your harbour question's/ self-respect-ing lueii- will liot knowingly subject ' thomselves again to such attacks. I '■ know, of course, that you and many . members of tho board deplore such - actions, and have.done-all that you ; possibly could to remove the ill— '■ effects i due to such attacks, but ' some flavour remains. I think that '. tho.-parish council mode of dealing . with largo public works must be very prejudicial." • . . It was resolved, after heated sion, that tho-'board regretted that. Mr. E. A.. Cullen .had declined to act as requested.
