Tho story of how- a settler ' lost a quarry valued at £700, and how a local body gained a. deeid«?d asset without being awaro of the factj was unfolded nt a meeting of tho Whaifgarei County Council. Stoma' time ago the council | decided, under the 'provisions " of • tho Public Act, to acquire a road through tho propErty of Mr. B. M'Lean at Euakakn-, and also to take over an Adjacent quarry on Tiis land. Later it Was decided to take over tho toad only. At this stage some error appears to have been tho result 'that, ■ unknown to. the interested parties, both the Toad -and the quarry were tested in the- local body for tho payment of £20. Prom that tin)* tlw County, Council has been taking metal from tho quarry, and paying a royalty on it. •This fact h*s. led to a most complex position,'as it 5s anticipated'; that tho Auditor-General miiy raise the point that such pays, mentsare illegal in.tho circumstances. Meanwhile'tho matter-is being- tirrestlgatcd with a view to finding a solution of the problem.'
