AFFAIR.IN A CANOE. Wanganul, February I<s. Extraordinary' evidence was given at tiio inquest to-day touching the death of a roadman named' Bert Jones, who was drowned in the river at Kaiwhaiki On Tuesday last; Timothy Hogan stated that deceased and he, who were engaged in roadmaking, walked to the Upokcmgaroa Hotel, where they staged till n'ooii. They had four or five ©inks, and they took' away with them three bottles of beef and one bottle; of whisky, - oin o of of which they drank on 1 tho way to the camp.' The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally drotvned through his own recklessness while under the influence'of drink.
