Knox Church Garden Party. On Saturday afternoon a most enjoyable garden party, orgasiisetl for the benciit of the funds of Knox Presbyterian Church, Lower Htttt, was held iii tho beautiful-grounds of "iklgownie," tho residence of the Hon. J. Duthie. Tho weather was all that could have btren wished for, and fully' three hundred and fifty people were present. Upon their arrival they werewelcomed by the Rev. Mr. M'Gaw, after which they dispersed about tho shady gardens and wooded paths on the hillside, or else made excursions down the river that flows through the grounds. The display of begafiias.m the conservatory met with much admiration, fully sixteen varieties oE these beautiful flowers being in full bloom. Miss Rais.v JVl'Lel.lan provided » pleasant interlude by her Highland daiieing, the music being played by Piper. M'Ddnald. A sweet stall, which hftd been arranged in a shady place, Was the centre of a thriving bnsinoss. Mrs, M'Caw, with, the assistance of a-number of helpers, presided over the arrangements for ten. Mr. Duthio. Was .present for a part of the afternoon, and among the visitors were some from TVangaiini, Masterton, and Wellington. Shortly after five everyone dispersed, after having spent a very : pleasant afternoon in the open air, and in the midst of such picturesque surroundings. Women and a Council of Education, : Women teachers generally aro interesting, themselves in the proposal thaiwas brought forward at the- annual meeting of the New Zealand Education Institute. held in Auckland recently, that, in the event of a Council of Education being formed, women slionld bo represented upon it. In their opinion it is a vital matter that- they,'as well as men, should be at tho centre of all educational matters and should have a voice in their idling, as they would know, the needs of . tho very young children, and it is also important that tho training of grqwins .girls should be in their hands. 'With an expert in the training of young children upon the proposed. Council aiid 'another expert conversant with tho methods of primary and secondary teaching, much assistaiiEß might be , gained in- settling. 1 the -many difficulties that have to. be. mrt- with in all educa-. tional matters. With the best intention in the world men cannot meet all the needs of girls- even in tlioir yoxitliful stages, and Use value of women upon the board would soon made itself felt. Another matter in which women teachers are taking a. keen interest is in the matter of spinal curvature. At the present moment arrangements for physical culture do not provide for individual cases, and it is possible that if medical inspectors aro given power to grant certiheates to children suffering, from spinal curvature, entitling them, to free tuition at a recognised school of physical culture, m-n.elt might be gained in dealing with a far too prevalent weakness among children.
