SWIMMING.

' fBl "SPLABE."I NOTES AND ANTIOIPAfIONS. The Oats To-day. To-day's carnival at Te Aro Baths is., as far as "Wellington swimmers aro concerned, the event of the Beasoii. The best of New Zealand swimmers are to compete, including Malcolm Champion, of Auckland, alii the three Christ- : church crocks —Coukson, Jerred, ana : Atkinson. The Wellington provincial champion- ! ship, which is to ho decided, should provide a great race, although, of course, Roberts and I'ordham should havo things much their own way. Both have been swimming consistently, and both are understood to be about equal to doing the same time. The relay raco should also provide a keen contest.. Our Chances at Blenheim. Wellington's prospects at the championships are decidedly brighter than they were last year. In the straightout swimming events we are not likely to "knd" anything big, hut.,, both in the polo and in th& life-saving, our chsncs afe considered to be the best. ■i'lio life-savers have been training assiduously for some tirno past, and have registered some trial performances which would seem to make victory cor-' tain. The polo team is not Wellington's strongest, but they are 'well forward in the matter of training, and should be a very tough preposition. Tlie "Huncirad." The hundred yards championship will !,e a great race, Champion (Auckland), Atkinson, Jerrcd, and Cookson (Ghristelvuich) are all much on the same plane, and they have no rivals' from Wellington. Ford'ha-m, the Wellington' nominee,' is not likely to do himself justice in the short bath,- even if ho had a chance-. . . In the longer distances', also, • Wellington have little or no chance. _ Newman may possibly .get a third in the mile, but in the other distances he will' he quito outclassed. In the breast-stroke ; o.vent, our representative (Neil) can, at best get second. Neil is not s-wiming as well this year as last-. , . . ■ Tils schoolboys championship seems-J-ikely to come our way witn young Murrel-1 as onr notniuec. Murpell is a very promising, junior, and tho trip should benefit him greatly. Miss Anuio O'Lcary will again repfe* sent us ill the ladies' events, but "Splash" is not sufficiently cognisant of tho performances of lady swimmers to prognosticate. Her sister. Miss Ella O'Lcary, will also make the trip. A Few Splashes. E, l'atorson, a junior member of the Swifts Club, performed- very creditably over the 220 yds. the other evening, l'atorson undoubtedly shows good .pfomkc, .and should take tho , sport -Up seriously. i Tim Swifts Club have rather an enterprising event in prospect, iii the shape of a swimming raco between tho wharves at Rana and Day's Bay. Local swimmers will 110 doubt look forward eagerly to- this event. The polo competition is at present in rather a peculiar position. 11l tho ordinary c; our so of events. Swifts and Wellington should havo to play off for the championship. The executive ; however, ordered ft replay of the match in which the Swifts team defeated Wellington. It. is understood that the Swifts men consider that- tho executive havo gone, quite outside their powers in ordering a replay, and will appeal to the Now Zealand Council;. . Tho Wanganui contingent for the ■ championships will not arrive in timeto compate this afternoon, but will: leave for Blenheim with the others in tho evening. Mr. Frank Turivbull, who made himself very popular with Wellington swimmers at- -the championship at Wanganui last year, will, it is Understood, hot ho in charge of tho Wanganui men at Blenheim. Mr. C. Xewcombe, secret tary of the Centre there, will -be the manager. Butler, erstwhile of the Swifts Club, is a member of tho Wanganui polo team for Blenheim,
