. SOME IMPRESSIONS. ' 'An interesting visitor to Christchurch just at present is Dr. R. Endlich, a Gorman agriculturist, who is spending a holiday in Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Endlich recently conducted experiments in cotton-raising in. Egypt, and has travelled extensively, in different parts .of the world in connection with his researches into the pollenisation of plants. • .... ..." ... In. .the course of a."conversation-with 'a.ircproseritatiye of ;thp_ "Press," .Dr. Endlich. expressed', some . astonishment that ' tlio' culture of "tobacco was. not taken up in somo, portions of the North Island. It was a crop that'was grown successfully in South • > Germany, and from his observations of'the climate and soil of the North Island. What had directed his attention to the matter, lie said; somewhat jocularly, wa3 the high price of tobacco. His travelling comCaptain Bonnetoh, of the-French . Army, told him that for tho prico he paid in. New Zealand' for ono . day's smoking he could, in Paris, obtain enough tobacco to. last him at least five days.. In tho Nelson district Dr. Endlich' saw a number of orchards, and commented on the fact that grass was allowed to grow between tho fruit trees. Much .better, results and : better growth were obtainable when the land was cultivated, as it allowed of the proper aeration of the soil.
