In most cases the fee was ' according, to the horse-power of tho car.: The fees were, cellested by the i police, and not the loeal bodies. In Victoria the fees amounted to £40,000 ■ per annum.' That amount,.plus another i £30,000 raised by leasing unused roads, was distributed for.the maintenance of main roads: He mentioned that because ho understood there was to be a ' conference in Auckland regarding the ' maintenance of main roads.
