He .Teamed thatj. the Government in : Victoria 'levied pretty heavy taxes upon motor-cafsi The, Government no doubt recognised that tho motorcar was the coming vehicle, and that roads had- to be'kept in first-class order for their • use. The amount levied, in New &kh land, upon motor-cars seemed perfectly ridiculous when compared with, that in , Australia. In most cases the fee was ' according, to the horse-power of tho car.: The fees were, cellested by the i police, and not the loeal bodies. In Victoria the fees amounted to £40,000 ■ per annum.' That amount,.plus another i £30,000 raised by leasing unused roads, was distributed for.the maintenance of main roads: He mentioned that because ho understood there was to be a ' conference in Auckland regarding the ' maintenance of main roads.
