PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The Wellington Presbytery met at St, John's Church last night, Rev. J. K. Elliott, B.A.j was appointed Moderator for tho -ensuing term. In response to a request from the Rev. W.. Douglas, M.A., liis naino was transferred to tho Uaivko's Bay Presbyter?. . .. On tli® motion of I)r, Gibb it was resolved to pteco oil record their profound sympathy with their beloved brother, ,Mr. J. G..AV. Aitken, in the serious and; painful illness with _ which it had pleased God tci .visit him, and their thankfulness that he- was now.on the way to .recovery. They pray that ho may Bo speedily restored to perfect health ana enabled to resume the long career of disinterested service .to the ■Cfiurch and tho community which has made limy in an almost unprecedented degreo the benefactor <if,both. ■ The Bev. Comrin moved-''That the Presbytery hears with deep. reprt of tho disaster which has .overtaken our mission in the New Hebrides, _ in> tho total destruction through volcanic eruption of the hospital pn Ambrym Island ' and tho loss of lifo among the natives. It records.its satisfaction that all the hospital patients wero removed to-a placo of safety, and its appreciation of tho heroic efforts our. esteemed coPresbyter. Dr. Bowie, and of Mrs. Bowio ' and Nurse Wright. The Presbytery ; also prays that Dr..Bowie may.speedily be restored to health ar.d enabled to retuni to tho work t<j which ho has devote! his life." The Rov. J. Gumming waff appointed visiting chaplain to tho Porinta Mental Hospital. Tho Presbytery then proceeded' to license Mr. J. D. Smith, son of the Rov, J. Gibson Smith, of St. Andrew's, who lias just completed his course of studies for the ministry ii 4 Knox College, Dtyiediri. The preparatory trials prescribed by tho Prcsuytery were reported as having been satisfactorily carried out. After the usual questions had been put by tho Moderator, Mr. Smith was declared ! duly licensed tq discharge .tho duties of I the ministry, and tho rigliCvhand of fet- [ lonsliip was extended to him by tho ■ members of the Presbytery.
