YOUNG MEN AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES.

Sir,—l would be glad of 9. line in your paper in.reference to .your leader of February 4 ott "Civic Responsibilities." It strildk me, and .has done so for some time, that thero is a reason and a'very strong one, too, why young men do not take up the work as required of them. I daresay there are hundreds liko myself who would no doubt like to do more for local government, shall I say, than what is done at present. I don't think 'it is from a purely egoistic view, and I don't think it is just amusement and pleasure and such like is.ail they look for, hut what encouragement is there for young men to take up public work when there is such a vindictive Press in existence, as there is in tin's country? It does not matter how honourable a man is, or how conscientious lie is, in his views, when ho starts to take interest .in public work what* does lie cot? Not fair criticism at all.' If he did it wonM be welt and healthy, but the immoral, personal, and vindictive spirit in whitfh the Press carry on their wars, I tliink it is anything but just, fair, and encouraging for young men to tftke. up civic responsibilities. • Let the Press "do their work like men, with not too much partyisui". and givo credit where credit is due, and I think the young blood of the country will rise and ta glad to do so. and do the work that is required and expected of them. Thanking vol! for space,—-I am, cti., PHO BONO PUBLICO.- ' February, 5.' v ■ I
