The motion was defeated without discussion. A CABLE FROM MR. HOLM AN. (Rec. February 8, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, February T, Mr. Carmichael has informed the Labour Conference that lie cabled Mr, Holman regarding his alleged "escape pipe" statement in tho Now Zealand press. Mr. Hokum's reply was to tho effect that the eablod report of his statement to tho Australian papers had been very much condensed, ana that ho did not say that "the Conference was a useful escape pipe" only, but on' the co»* trary he had also eiioplinsised the many valuable decisions- it had already readied, and tho good seiiso and good feeling it had shown. Ho further quoted the New Zealand press as reporting him to liavs referred to the Conference as ani- , mated throughout with a fill! recognition of the necessity for strengthening the movement to clear the way for effee* tive legislation, The conference unanimously accepted the ..explanation.
