THE WAIKANAE RACE MEETING.
Sir, —I was under the impression that the one 'good act of the Continuous Ministry was the passing of a Bill .in tho interest of good facing, mid the prevention of gambling, doing away with all and sundry small race meetings. • Now, I understand that the stewards of the Waikanae Racing- Club (a very small concern) frit-end applying for a totalisator permit. Is such a meting-conducive to the good sport or tho improving; of tho breed in'horSos? 1 think not. Just look at' tho sorry class of animals run at the late meeting. Would the owners of first-class horses send them thero to compete for
were the owners of tho hacks which rail on the two last occasions satisfied with the starting conditions? If I might be allowed to suggest to the promoters of this New Year's Bay ineethig, instead of a wretched exhibition of so-called horse-racing, they were, to provide a good athletic and sports meeting, offering prizes of value, set as to attract good taleht, they would find it Would prove a great success, not only so far as tho general public vrero concerned, also financially. Trusting these remarks may commend themselves t<3 the members of tins Waikanao Rating Club, —I am, etc., REFORM. January 30, 1014. [The idea of the club is that with the revenue it would derive from the total isator it would bo able to provide better stakes, and so attract a better class of horses to its race meetings.]
