Chrislohuroh, February 7. Vocation stripped well in the Trial Stakes, and bo did Historiette. Tho latter was ridden , by an unknown ap•prentioo, and tlw 61b, ullawatico . war otaimod. Vocation, tha favourite, was
ono of the last to move, while Madamn, loil oil'. Historsette was "welt placed in the lirst part and fed into the straight, but then Vocation and Silver Shield challenged and sooit i displaced Iter. Tho Wairarapa horse iinisiiod well, and stalling off Madama, who eame on the mils, ho won nicely by a length, Firmhoid was clear of the rest, Flower of the West started nt a very, short price in the Hornby Welter, but she got chopped out badly; and though she showed up in socoml placo halfway down the straiglit alio was beaten out of a place at the finish. Tlvc outsider Respond, who goes fast over half a mile, stole a march 011 tho Weld in the first part, and was not again headed. Jit. Victoria finished on well and got second place, just clear of Glenewl. The .favourite was fourth. As was' anticipated the penalties proved too much for Reputation, who could only finish fourth iu the .Middle Park Plate. The winner turned up in Sauci (Charlemagne 11—Hope Diamond), a maiden three-year-old, who was advantaged to the extent cf 181b.. The winner looks a much improved horse, and may go on winning now, though his form to-day does not make, him out a champion. Honesty, Court-Martial, and Rencontre led to thd home turn, where Night Watch took charge, hut Sauci then came with a .great run and won by a good neck, Night Wsiteh was a half-length to the good of his stable- 1 mate, Court-Martial, and Reputation was a length, away, just clear of Honesty. Mowbray ran very wide at the turn, mid so did Sauci. • With the withdrawal of Flora jYiacDonald, Thrax saw a short pric.o in tho Midsummer Handicap, and tho Martian gelding at 110/ stage of tho race looked other than a winner, . Contrary to expectations, Martins started ill' this in* stead of the seven-furlongs event. Glenfinnan was second favourite. Troon made play from Spccialform for a mile, when- the field moved up. Rounding the bend Glenfinnan's name was called, hut Spccialform led into the straight frein Odessa and Thrpx. The last-named cam©, fast and won comfortably. Odessa- heat Specialform by a lieck, and four lengths away came'Glenfinnan and M{trt.hvs.' It was only to be , expected' that tho Ohokebore bracket (Bold Stroke and Snapdragon) wotild ho a solid order in the two-year-old race, and subsequent . events justified the support.; though i Angelina (Down shire—Angele), a member of M. -Hobbs's team, received very solid backing find went oat second favourite.' ' At the, barrier tho two favourites'went out well together,' and'as. ■they raced into the straight Bold Stroke ! was showing clear of Angelina, the two i separated themselves from the field, but Snapdragon finished on well and heat Angelina for second placo. Mtnllu was fourth, and. Roumaiiia, fifth. Stardalicer, Mt. Victoria, and First Glance wero backed in that order for Hie' Craven Plato,' and the last-named, after, beginning smartly, stalled off several stron'g challenges alid -woii all out by a length. Vocation again finished very well, but failed to givo the Irish-bred fillv 201b. Briar Patch was running oji j well in third plaeo,- and then ciimo Morton. ■ Bonne Bouoho and Scotch Melody were favourites in the Halswell Hack, but .tho former failed badly and was tailed off tlio whole way. Scotch Melody, who is now racing fo.r the third season, won handily from the littlc-faneied Slogan. : Firmhoid again o.scii-picd third placo. ■_ The well-bred Trilby nj-ade the running till well down- the straight, but tho distance heat her. The .scratching pen was freely used in tlie Post Handicap, Only four horses statt-od, and Gnome was 'the outsider of the field', with the other trio evenly baoked.'; At. tho. start Veritas led, hut at the end of a furlong he shied at a ■ 'post, lost r . his. position,' and failed to reach the front again., Salzburg led till well down tho straight, when Tho.Cornet took charge and .'looked a winner, hut _ .Gnpmo..finished .very. strongly and hea;t •. inm hy a,long neck. .
