AN ASTRONOMER'S ADDRESS. , Mr t J. Ijfroraliecl, who has been visiting Ivew Zealand to report an the best site for tho Oawthron Observatory, gave a short address on his experience's "and work in India to an intcioatod gathering at Victoria College yesterday afternoon, The address was illustrated with a num-' her of slides taken in India, dealing mostly with sun spots. ■ There seemed to bo a curious connoN tion, said Mr,'. Evorshod, between sun spots and the ■ earth; particularly with regard to magnetism, It .had been proved that .there was a magnetic field in the spots, which. radiated gas in alt directions. These wore called eruptions','". explained Mr. Evershed, although if was' not known what Was taking place on tlio sun. It was very "difficult to understand why curious eruptions occurred, hut it was the duty of solar- observatories to take note of' all the phenomenal occurrences taking place. Tiwro were a groat many curious fact? about the sun which could not yet bo explained, but rapid advances wero being made,' and the utility of solar observatories ; had been fully demonstrated.
