Councillor Wright said that- at tho present timo there was -an S-frunchneb of water, and he submitted t-tet it was .unreasonable to expect citizehs to irji-, prove their garden's and beautify tho city if they wore debarred from water-. tag their plots with a hose and ftero restricted, to the- use of a watering-can. He | added that it. would require an army of inspectors to jrrevent the. illegal uso of the hose for garden-watering purposes. The Mayor said that the resolution Would -apply generally, and it was a question whether it should apply to thehigh levels as it cost a considerable sum per thousand gallons to pump Water up to those levels.'. Tho city engineer sftid that if.,water was to be used for gardening purposes on tho high levels there would ho a very heavy bill for pumping, It cost now about £B0 or £i) 0 a. month to pwiip water up to Brooklyn alone. A great number of people wcro provided with meters already, and a considerable amount of rovonue would bo lost if these were dispensed with. His own impres* sion was that - the best courso would bo 'to arrange-,.' if possible, to supply ■meters at a cheaper rate. Councillor W. JF. Thompson seconded Councillor Wright's niotioq.,. .
