IMMIGRANTS IN 1913
A.GAIN IN POPULATION OF. 14,219.; By excess of arrivals over departures, the Dominion's 'population wa.ei last, year increased by, 14,219 persons. With the exception,of 1908, when the figures were exceeded by-a few score, the gain by immigration was larger than in any year during the last 'decade, the figures in the last few preceding years being as follow:—1912, 8927; 1911,'4200; 1910, ,3408; 1909, 1 4719. Of the total gain last year 12,058'; were from the "United Kingdom, 964 from Victoria, 513 from Tasmania, 317-from New South .Wales, and the balance from varjous sources. . During the 'year 25,182 persons arrived at "Wellington from overseas ports, and 14,539 departed for abroad. The next port,was Auckland,, where 13,131 persons arrived and 11,300 departed. Tho total arrivals were 44,588, and the departures 30,369. Of the surplus of 14,219 remaining, 5684 wore classed' as adult males; (over 12 years), and 5283 as adult females, tho balance of 3252 being children. The arrivals were heaviest from December to March, and the departures from, March .to May. . ..

Tho warehouse (plana for which have been prepared by Messrs. Penty and Lawrence) will have a frontage to Old Customhouse Street of 64ft.., and ono to Lombard Street of 60ft., and will be constructed in brick and steel. *• Mr. T. Mr. James Gardiner, who had. resided In Christchurch for tho past forty years, (jnd who was wejl-known ■ throughout New Zealand as a_ theatrical agent, died ot his home at Linwood on 'J uesday. To-day tho scholars attending the girls' and boys' primary schoolß at Mount Cook have been granted a holiday in order to carry oui a Sports-pro-gramme in. Newtown Park. A certain amount of money has been subscribed for prizes, and given .fine weather the outing is expected to prove a pleasing one. The holiday was originally fixed for December 16 last, but owing -to tjie day being very wet it had to be postponed.
