WATERSPOUT AT ROTORUA.
STRIKING SPECTACLE. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, February 3. On Sunday afternoon a group of peoplo were idly watching Lake Rotorua when they noticed a strango commotion iir tlio -water, off Ko-waha Point. There .were'various conjectures as to the causo, but finally it was' agreed that it. was the work of an "awlnowhio," or whirlwind. .To the consternation of tho spectators spindrift appeared in tho clouds, and the troubling of the waters increased while travelling at a good speed in an easterly direction. Eventually tho connection between the water and tho clouds became complete, and a genuine waterspout was formed in front of tho interested and excited onlookers. Tho'flexibility of the column of water was clearly demonstrated. Somotimos it- was curved, then' it straightened and lengthened itself, being followed by a waxing aiid waving with an almost constant - billowy motion. At times it appeared as if tho waterspout was composed of a number of slender and distinct- columns.
